Why Your Skin Changes — and What It’s Really Asking For

At some point in midlife, many women notice that their skin no longer behaves the way it once did. Products that used to deliver glow suddenly feel irritating. Skin feels drier, more sensitive, and slower to recover. Fine lines seem more visible, and there may be a general sense that your skin has become “difficult”.

This can feel frustrating — but it’s important to know that your skin isn’t failing.

It’s changing.

Midlife Skin Is Biologically Different

During perimenopause and menopause, hormonal shifts — particularly the gradual decline in oestrogen — affect the skin at a structural and functional level.

Oestrogen plays a key role in:

  • Maintaining collagen and elastin

  • Supporting skin thickness and density

  • Regulating hydration and lipid production

  • Influencing wound healing and repair

As oestrogen levels decline, the skin naturally produces fewer lipids, becomes thinner, and repairs itself more slowly. These changes are not sudden, but cumulative — and they directly influence how skin looks, feels, and responds to skincare.

Why Skin Becomes Drier and More Sensitive

One of the most noticeable changes in midlife skin is dryness — often accompanied by sensitivity or reactivity.

This isn’t simply a lack of moisture. It is usually a sign that the skin barrier is under strain.

As natural oil production decreases:

  • The protective lipid barrier weakens

  • Transepidermal water loss (TEWL) increases

  • The skin becomes more vulnerable to irritants

When the barrier is compromised, skin may feel tight after cleansing, react to products it once tolerated, or appear inflamed and dull.

Slower Repair, Greater Impact

Midlife skin also repairs itself more slowly. Cell turnover decreases, collagen synthesis slows, and recovery from environmental stress — such as UV exposure, pollution, and inflammation — takes longer.

This means that:

  • Damage accumulates more easily

  • Irritation lingers for longer

  • Aggressive skincare has a greater impact

What once felt “effective” may now feel overwhelming.

Ageing Skin Is Often Undersupported Skin

Many visible signs of ageing — dryness, sensitivity, dullness, loss of resilience — are not signs that the skin needs to be pushed harder.

They are signs that the skin needs more support.

Midlife skin often struggles not because it is ageing, but because:

  • Natural resources have declined

  • The barrier is weakened
